Advantages of Graphite Electrode

Low density and low quality: The density of graphite is only 1/5 of that of copper, and graphite electrodes can greatly reduce the load during spark machining.

Smaller thermal expansion rate: The thermal expansion rate of graphite is 1/4 of that of copper, which can effectively reduce the deviation caused by the heating deformation of the electrode.

Good processability

The cutting resistance of graphite materials is relatively small, and its processing efficiency is about twice to three times that of copper. The use of graphite materials can reduce the processing of electrodes.

It is easier to realize the processing of thin rib styles

The processing of copper electrodes produced by cutting heat is prone to thermal deformation. Because of the plastic nature of the material, elastic deformation will easily occur when processing thin ribs, causing processing shock.

Outstanding electrical discharge roughing efficiency

The melting point of copper is 1083℃, and the temperature at the moment of discharge can reach 1100℃. The copper electrode is easy to wear, while the graphite will sublime at 3550℃.

Types of Graphite Electrode

Natural graphite electrode

Natural graphite electrodes are electrodes produced using natural flake graphite as raw materials. Coal tar pitch is added to natural graphite, and after kneading, molding, roasting and machining, natural graphite electrodes can be prepared.

Artificial graphite electrode

Using petroleum coke or pitch coke as solid aggregate and coal tar pitch as binder, the artificial graphite electrode can be prepared through kneading, molding, roasting, graphitization and machining.

Graphite electrode with anti-oxidation coating

The anti-oxidation coating graphite electrode adopts the "alternating spraying-melting method" or "solution dipping method" to form an anti-oxidation coating on the surface of the processed graphite electrode to achieve the purpose of reducing the oxidation consumption of the graphite electrode.

Water-cooled composite graphite electrode

The water-cooled composite graphite electrode is a conductive electrode used after the graphite electrode is combined with a special steel pipe. The double-layer steel pipe at the upper end is cooled by water, and the graphite electrode at the lower end is connected to the steel pipe through a water-cooled metal joint.

Hollow graphite electrode

Hollow graphite electrodes are hollow electrodes. This product is prepared by directly pressing the electrode into a hollow tube during forming or drilling in the center of the electrode during processing.

Regenerated graphite electrode

The recycled graphite electrode is prepared by using recycled artificial graphite scraps and powder as raw materials, adding coal tar pitch, kneading, forming, roasting and machining.

Properties of Graphite Electrodes

Density: Compared with other materials, the density of graphite electrodes is higher, between 1.6-1.78g/cm3.

Conductivity: The particular layered structure of carbon atoms in graphite is conducive to the free flow of electrons, so the conductivity is solid.

Flexural strength: Graphite has high mechanical strength, so the bending moment stress per unit area is relatively large.

Modulus of elasticity

Young’s modulus increases with temperature.

Corrosion resistance

Because of its stable chemical properties, it does not react with other substances at room temperature.

Thermal conductivity

Graphite is a non-metallic mineral, and its heat conduction method is the thermal vibration of lattice atoms to transfer heat.

Thermal expansion coefficient

It is much lower than other materials and is more suitable for environments with high temperatures and significant changes.

Graphite Electrodes

Application of Graphite Electrode

Steel industry

They are widely used in electric arc furnaces (eaf) for steel production. They serve as the conductive elements that create the electric arc to melt the scrap. Electrodes must withstand extreme temperatures and high mechanical stress.

Aluminum industry

Graphite electrodes are used in the smelting process of aluminum production. They are used in the electrolysis of aluminum oxide (aluminum oxide) in electrolytic cells.

Silicon industry

They can produce silicon and other silicon-based materials. In silicon refining, quartz, coke, etc., are used as raw materials to obtain high-purity silicon through chemical reactions.

Foundry industry

Graphite electrodes manufacture cast iron and steel products in foundries. In this process, they are used in electric arc furnaces to melt the metal and act as conductors when starting the casting process.

Chemical industry

They are used in various chemical processes that require high temperatures and electrical conductivity. For example, they are used in electrolyzers to produce chlorine gas and caustic soda from brine solutions.

Production Process of Graphite Electrode

Raw materials used in graphite electrode manufacturing: The first step in the graphite electrode manufacturing process is sourcing the right raw materials. Graphite electrodes are made from a blend of petroleum coke, pitch coke, and coal tar pitch. These materials are carefully selected for their purity and consistency.

Mixing and extruding: Once the raw materials have been sourced, they are mixed together in a large mixer. The mixture is then extruded into the desired shape and size using a high-pressure extruder. The extruded product is then cut to the required length.

Baking: The next step in the manufacturing process is baking. The extruded product is placed in a baking oven and heated to extremely high temperatures (up to 3000 degrees celsius) in an oxygen-free environment. This process is called graphitization and is what gives the graphite electrode its unique properties.

Machining: Once the baking process is complete, the graphite electrodes are machined to their final shape and size. This process requires precision equipment and highly skilled operators.

Quality control: Quality control is an essential part of the graphite electrode manufacturing process. Every batch of electrodes is carefully inspected to ensure that they meet the required standards for quality and consistency.

FAQ

Q: What is the difference between graphite electrode and carbon electrode?

A: The graphite electrode is mainly used in the electric furnace steel making process whereas the carbon is primarily used in the electro chemical analysis or electro chemical experiments process. The carbon is a good conductor of electric current and it is a key requirement for the successful electrolysis.

Q: Why use graphite electrodes?

A: Graphite is used as an electrode material because it is a good conductor of electricity, is chemically stable, and can withstand high temperatures. It also has a low reactivity and thermal expansion coefficient, making it suitable for electrode use in electrochemical cells.

Q: Why are graphite electrodes replaced?

A: Eventually, the electrodes become too small or worn out to be effective, requiring replacement. Regular maintenance and replacement of electrodes are necessary to ensure the efficient operation of the electric arc furnace.

Q: Why is it preferable to use a number of graphite electrodes as anode?

A: Some of the oxygen reacts with the carbon in the graphite to form carbon dioxide. by consuming the anode slowly. Thus the anodes have to be replaced periodically or a number of graphite electrode as anodes have to be used.

Q: Where are graphite electrodes used?

A: Graphite electrodes find application in manufacture of Steel and other non-ferrous metals through the Electric Arc Furnace and the Laddle Furnace routes. It is used as a consumable for conducting high current at low voltage which is necessary for melting and / or alloying processes.

Q: What is the difference between copper and graphite electrodes?

A: Graphite can drill cut up to three times faster than copper and provides excellent surface finishes. Another huge advantage of graphite is no burrs are produced in its machining. The graphite material can be machined on a high-speed mill and its easier to cut out complex shapes and forms.

Q: Is graphite electrode inert?

A: Both the combination either high electrical conductivity and a layered structure makes graphite an inert electrode and this can be used in various electrochemical systems.

Q: Why do graphite electrodes need replacing?

A: The oxygen reacts with the carbon in the electrodes, forming carbon dioxide which bubbles off. Carbon is therefore lost from the positive electrodes, so they must be replaced frequently. This adds to the cost of the process.
