What is Silicon Metal?

Silicon metal is a versatile element that finds its applications in various industries such as electro, metallurgy, and chemical industry. It has a silver-gray or dark-gray appearance with a metallic luster. Silicon metal has a high melting point, good heat resistance, high resistivity, and superior oxidation resistance.

 

The different grades of metal silicon are divided based on the content of iron, aluminum, and calcium present in them. These grades include 553, 441, 3303, 2202, 1101, etc. The source of the silicon metal number is based on four digits, where each digit indicates the maximum content requirements of iron, aluminum, and calcium, which are the main impurity elements in the product. The iron and aluminum content takes one digit after the decimal point, while the calcium content takes two digits after the decimal point. For instance, 441 represents the content of iron, aluminum, and calcium in silicon metal as 0.4%, 0.4%, and 0.1%, respectively.

Preparation of raw materials

The main raw materials used in the production of silicon metal are silicon dioxide (SiO2) and smelted silicon (Si). Silicon dioxide is usually extracted or processed from ores like quartz ore and quartz sand, while smelted silicon is obtained through high-temperature reduction smelting using a smelting furnace.

Smelting

First of all, the raw material of silicon dioxide and smelting silicon is mixed according to a certain ratio, and then sent to the electric furnace or high-temperature smelting furnace for heating, to achieve high-temperature conditions. At high temperatures, smelting silicon will undergo a reduction reaction to reduce silicon dioxide to silicon metal. At the same time, according to the process requirements, certain fluxes, deoxidizers, and alloying elements can be added to adjust the composition and properties of silicon metal.

Refining and purification

After melting silicon metal still contains certain impurities and non-metallic components, which need to be refined and purified. Commonly used refining methods include vacuum furnace refining silicon and atmosphere furnace refining silicon. Vacuum furnace refining of silicon is the use of high-temperature melting under vacuum conditions, impurities and non-metallic oxides, and other volatilization, to achieve high purity of silicon metal. Atmosphere furnace silicon refining is carried out under specific atmosphere conditions, through the gas reaction in the atmosphere to improve the purity of silicon metal.

Casting and processing

After refining and purification, silicon metal can be cast. Generally, continuous casting or crystal growth methods are used, whereby molten silicon metal is injected into a specific mold or crystal growth equipment and cooled and solidified to form silicon metal lumps or crystals. Then, after adjustment and processing, silicon metal products meeting the requirements can be obtained.

Quality Inspection and Packaging

Finally, the produced silicon metal is subjected to quality testing. Common testing methods include chemical analysis, physical property testing and impurity content testing. After passing the test, the silicon metal is packed and stored for subsequent transport and use.
