How to make ferro silicon?

 

 

  • Raw material preparation: Select high-purity silicon and iron ore as raw materials. Silicon ore is processed by crushing, grinding, etc., and iron ore is processed by crushing, magnetic separation, etc.
  • Mixed smelting: The processed silicon ore and iron ore are mixed in a certain proportion and then put into a high-temperature electric furnace for smelting. During the smelting process, a certain amount of coke is added as a reducing agent to reduce the iron oxide in the iron ore to metallic iron.
  • Alloy adjustment: During the smelting process, the silicon content of ferrosilicon is adjusted as needed. This can be achieved by adding an appropriate amount of silica or other alloys with a high silicon content.
  • Cooling out of the furnace: After the smelting is completed, the molten ferrosilicon is poured into the mold and taken out after cooling and solidification. 

 

What Is The Difference Between Silicon Metal And Ferrosilicon?

 

1. Selection And Preparation Of Raw Materials
   The main raw materials of silicon metal are quartz stone and coke, in which quartz stone needs to be crushed and washed to get quartz sand that meets the requirements. The main raw materials of ferrosilicon are silica ore, metallurgical silicon and scrap iron, etc. The beneficiation process of silica ore is more strict. In addition, the silicon content of the two alloys is not the same, the silicon content of silicon metal is generally more than 99%, while the silicon content of ferrosilicon is about 70%.

2. Charge Ratio
   The charge ratio of silicon metal is relatively simple, usually a certain proportion of quartz sand and coke. On the other hand, the charge ratio of ferrosilicon has to take into account the needs of different ferroalloys, usually including silica ore, metallurgical silicon, scrap steel miscellaneous iron, and other components. Ferrosilicon is also mixed with a certain proportion of limestone and dolomite, which is used to regulate the furnace temperature and improve processes such as slag desulphurization.

3. Smelting Process
   Silicon metal is usually smelted by the electric furnace method, the furnace temperature is higher, and the ore and coke react in the furnace to produce silicon metal. Ferrosilicon is usually smelted by blast furnace method or electric furnace method. The blast furnace method has the advantages of continuity and stability, and is suitable for mass production; the electric furnace method is suitable for small batch or special quality requirement production.

4. Product characteristics
   Silicon metal has the characteristics of high purity, high melting point, and low impurity, which are widely used in high-tech fields such as photoelectricity and semiconductors. What Is Ferrosilicon Used For?

 

(1) Ferro Silicon Alloy is Used as a deoxidizer and alloying agent in the steel-making industry. In order to obtain the chemical composition of qualified steel and ensure the quality of steel, in the final stage of steelmaking must be deoxidized, silicon and oxygen between the chemical affinity is very large, and thus ferrosilicon is a strong deoxidizer for steelmaking for precipitation and diffusion deoxidisation.


(2)Ferro Silicon Inoculant Used as inoculant and spheroidising agent in cast iron industry. Add a certain amount of ferrosilicon in cast iron can prevent the formation of carbides in iron, and promote the precipitation of graphite and spheroidisation, and thus in the production of ductile iron, ferrosilicon is an important inoculant (to help precipitate graphite) and spheroidising agent.


(3)Fe Silicon is Used as a reducing agent in ferroalloy production. Not only is there a great chemical affinity between silicon and oxygen, but high silica ferrosilicon has a very low carbon content. Therefore, high silica ferrosilicon (or siliceous alloy) is a kind of reducing agent commonly used in the production of low-carbon ferroalloys in the ferroalloy industry.


(4)75  Ferrosilicon in the Pidgeon process of refining magnesium is often used in the high-temperature smelting process of magnesium metal to replace the magnesium in CaO. MgO, and every tonne of magnesium metal to be produced will consume about 1.2 tonnes of ferrosilicon, which plays a great role in the production of magnesium metal.
