Ferro Silicon 45% For Casting Iron

FeSi45 for cast iron is a silicon-bearing ferroalloy used when you need to adjust the silicon level of molten iron while working with a lower-silicon ferrosilicon grade. We supply Ferro Silicon 45 with selectable particle sizes for furnace or ladle addition. Before ordering, you can confirm the required Si range, impurity limits, particle size, packing and batch specification according to your foundry process.

Ferro Silicon 45% (FeSi45) provides silicon and iron to the melt. In cast iron production, it can be used when your charge calculation or melting practice requires a moderate silicon addition rather than a higher-silicon ferro silicon grade.

The correct choice depends on your base iron chemistry, target silicon content, expected silicon recovery and addition method. FeSi45 should therefore be selected from the complete melt requirement rather than from the grade name alone.

The current standard FeSi45 specification is shown below. For cast iron orders, you should confirm not only the silicon range but also the acceptable Al, Ca, P, S and C limits according to your own melt specification.

For a foundry order, the grade name alone is not enough. If your process has a maximum Al or Ca requirement, send the limit with your inquiry so that the available FeSi45 batch can be checked against your specification.

• Low-Al Requirement: Low-Al FeSi45 below 1.0% can be discussed when your casting specification requires tighter aluminum control.
• Available Size Directions: 1-3 mm and 3-8 mm for smaller additions; 10-50 mm and 50-100 mm for furnace-oriented supply.

Confirm FeSi45 Specification

When the silicon level of your base iron is below the process target, FeSi45 can be included in the charge or added during melting according to your foundry practice. The required quantity depends on the silicon increase you need and the silicon actually recovered into the molten iron.

This means there is no reliable universal statement such as "use a fixed number of kilograms of FeSi45 per ton." Two foundries producing similar cast iron may still require different additions because the starting chemistry, furnace condition, slag practice and silicon recovery are different.

For production calculations, use the actual silicon content shown for the batch and your own historical recovery data rather than assuming an ideal recovery rate.

FeSi45 contains less silicon per kilogram than FeSi65, FeSi72 or FeSi75. As a result, more FeSi45 is normally required to provide the same theoretical amount of silicon.

That does not mean a higher-silicon grade is always the better choice. FeSi45 may be appropriate when your existing charge recipe is based on this grade, when you need a moderate silicon correction, or when your internal raw-material specification specifically calls for FeSi45.

• Choose according to the target silicon level of your melt.
• Compare the required addition mass for different ferro silicon grades.
• Check whether Al, Ca, P, S and C limits match your internal specification.
• Confirm whether the selected particle size fits your charging or feeding method.

Particle size should match how you introduce FeSi45 into the melt. Larger lumps are generally more suitable for furnace charging, while smaller particles provide more flexibility for smaller additions or ladle-side feeding.

Do not select particle size only from availability. Tell us your furnace or feeding method, required size range and fines requirement so that the material can be prepared according to your purchase specification.

For cast iron production, Si content is only the starting point of specification confirmation. The batch chemistry should also be checked against the impurity limits required by your own foundry.

• Si: Confirm that the batch falls within your required FeSi45 silicon range.
• Al and Ca: Check these against your process specification rather than assuming one limit suits every casting.
• P and S: Confirm maximum allowable levels when these impurities are tightly controlled in your melt.
• C: Include the carbon value when it is relevant to your total charge calculation.
• Particle Size: Confirm that the delivered material matches the size stated in your purchase order.
