Calcium carbide is a solid, non-volatile substance. It reacts really strongly with water. It's one of the main causes of water pollution. When it comes into contact with water, it breaks down, releasing acetylene and calcium oxide hydrate. And if it comes into contact with something that can cause oxidation, like some other gases, it'll release acetylene and heat. Acetylene gas is lighter than air, so can build up in poorly ventilated rooms at high altitudes.

 

 

It's not flammable, though. It reacts easily with silver, copper, and mercury salts to form unstable acetylenides that can ignite. It can catch fire on its own, whether it's in its pure form or a mix with air. And don't forget, water in the containers can lead to an explosion.
