Carbides are defined as chemical compounds that result from the reaction between carbon and metals in an alkaline environment. This reaction frequently yields superhard alloys that possess hardness comparable to that of diamonds. Among these compounds, calcium carbide, denoted chemically as CaC2, is the most recognized and prevalent.

The synthesis of calcium carbide necessitates two primary reactants: calcium oxide (CaO), commonly referred to as quicklime, and carbon sources such as coke (which includes anthracite and coal). The chemical reaction can be represented as follows:

CaO + 3C → CaC2 + CO.

In the production process, both reactants are first crushed and subsequently subjected to roasting and melting through the electric arc method. The resultant mixture solidifies, after which it is crushed and sorted. The minimum temperature required for the formation of calcium carbide is 1619°C; however, the reaction typically occurs at elevated temperatures ranging from 1900°C to 1950°C. It is noteworthy that as the temperature increases, calcium carbide may decompose into its constituent metal and carbon.
