Like metallic silicon, the production of ferrosilicon also consumes a lot of electricity. High purity cast ferrosilicon 65 is used in ferrous metallurgy to modify, alloy and deoxidize steel and is also used in foundries to smelt grey and high strength cast iron in furnaces (adding silicon to the molten cast iron).
