Ferrosilicon, an alloy of iron and silicon, contains between 18 and 95% silicon, with possible inclusion of trace elements of manganese, aluminum, titanium, chromium, sulfur, carbon, and phosphorus. Ferrosilicon is used as an additive in smelting and deoxidation to produce tool and structural steels, modify cast iron, and change the composition of alloys. Silicon alloying improves steel hardness, yield and elastic strength, tensile and oxidation resistance, and reduces electrical energy loss.
