Adding a small amount of bismuth to steel, iron, aluminium and bronze can significantly improve the machinability of the material. The amount of bismuth used as an additive is increasing year by year and has become one of the main uses.

1. Adding 0.1-0.4% bismuth to free-cutting steel can improve the cutting performance of the steel. When bismuth is evenly dispersed in the steel, the fine particles of bismuth melt upon contact with the cutting tool, acting as a lubricant and causing the chips to break, preventing overheating and thus allowing the cutting speed to be increased. Recently, bismuth has been added in large quantities to stainless steel to improve its cutting performance. This application will soon be extended to other steel types.

2. Adding 0.2-0.6% bismuth to aluminium can improve its machinability, and the mechanism is similar to that for steel. Adding 0.2-0.4% bismuth to Al-Mg alloys can prevent the alloys from cracking during rolling, and enhance the alloys' corrosion resistance and external force resistance.

3. Adding bismuth to copper can be used to make wear-resistant alloys and gears.

4. Adding 0.002-0.005% bismuth to cast iron can improve the casting properties of malleable cast iron, increase the tendency to white metal and shorten the annealing time, and the elongation properties of the parts become better. Adding 0.005% bismuth to ductile iron can improve its seismic resistance and tensile strength. Adding bismuth to steel is difficult because it volatilises at 1500°C, making it difficult to uniformly infiltrate the steel.
