The smelting of bismuth involves two steps: rougher and finer refining.

The method of crude refining varies depending on the raw material:

1. When using bismuth sulfide concentrate, a mixture of bismuth oxide and bismuth, bismuth oxide residue, and bismuth oxychloride as raw materials for refining bismuth, a mixed melting method is used. An appropriate amount of iron filings, soda ash, fluorite powder, and coal powder are added and mixed in a reverberatory furnace to obtain crude bismuth, which is then sent for refining.

2. The refining method using calcium, magnesium and bismuth dross produced during the pyrometallurgical refining of lead as raw material is as follows: the dross is first heated so that the lead it contains can be removed by sinking. The dross is then heated further, melted, and lead chloride is added or chlorine gas is passed through to remove the calcium and magnesium, yielding a lead-bismuth alloy rich in bismuth, which is then sent for refining.

Refining generally includes four steps: oxidation to remove arsenic, antimony and tellurium; zinc addition to remove silver; chlorination to remove lead and zinc; and high-temperature chlorine removal.
