The primary raw material for ferrochrome production is chromite ore (FeCr₂O₄).
Other essential materials include:
1. Chromite Ore (FeCr₂O₄)
The main source of chromium, found in countries like South Africa, India, Kazakhstan, and Turkey.
Typically contains 40–50% Cr₂O₃ (chromium oxide).
2. Reducing Agents (Used to extract chromium and iron from chromite)
Coke (carbon source)
Coal (sometimes used in place of coke)
Charcoal (in some low-carbon ferrochrome production)
3. Fluxing Agents (Help remove impurities and form slag)
Limestone (CaCO₃) – Removes sulfur and stabilizes slag
Dolomite (CaMg(CO₃)₂) – Helps in slag formation
Quartz (SiO₂) – Controls silicon content
4. Energy Source
Electricity: Ferrochrome is produced in submerged arc furnaces (SAF) using high-power electric arcs.
