SILICONE NITRIDE is a chemical compound of silicon and nitrogen with the formula Si3N4. It is a yellowish solid that can be cut or shaped. Type α-Si3N4 is stable up to 1400°C, while type β-Si3N4 is above 1400°C (both types have a hexagonal crystal lattice). It melts at 1900 °C (at this temperature it begins to break down), has a density of 3200 kg/m3 and is very hard. Its dielectric constant is between 6.3 and 7.1.
Under normal conditions, it does not react with other substances; when boiled with water, it slowly releases oxygen and ammonia; when heated, it reacts with oxygen, chlorine and hydrogen; reacts with alkali melts (silicates and ammonia are formed, for example: Si3N4+6NaOH+3H2O=3Na2SiO3+4NH3) to produce hot hydrofluoric acid, which then reacts with ammonium fluorosilicate and silicon tetrafluoride to produce again ammonium fluorosilicate and silicon tetrafluoride:Si3N4+16HF = 2(NH4)2[SiF6]+SiF4. C. n. is obtained by exposing silicon powder to nitrogen at a temperature above 1300 °C or as a result of a reaction in the gas phase: 3SiCl 4 + 4NH 3 = Si 3 N 4 + 12HCl.C. is used in microelectronics as a dielectric and for the production of heat-resistant nitride ceramics.
