Why Do International Vanadium Prices Differ?
Quick Answer: International vanadium prices can look very different even on the same day because the quotations may not represent the same product, vanadium content, quotation unit, regional market or delivery basis.
A ferrovanadium quotation in USD/kg V, a U.S. quotation in USD/lb and a China domestic quotation in RMB/MT cannot be compared by looking at the numbers alone. The product grade, vanadium-content basis, currency, Incoterm and delivery condition must first be aligned.
For the latest market reference rather than pricing methodology, see our international vanadium pentoxide price update.
1. Vanadium Prices Use Different Quotation Units
The first reason international vanadium prices appear different is that different markets and products use different quotation units.
| Market / Product | Common Quotation Basis | What You Are Comparing |
| Europe Ferrovanadium | USD/kg V | Price based on contained vanadium |
| U.S. Ferrovanadium | USD/lb | Regional ferrovanadium quotation basis |
| International V2O5 | USD/lb V | Reference based on contained vanadium |
| China Domestic Market | RMB/MT | Price per metric ton of material |
This means a price such as USD 26/kg V should not be compared directly with USD 15/lb or RMB 75,000/MT. The unit and calculation basis must first be converted to the same commercial basis.
2. Product Grade Changes the Price
Vanadium products with different grades are not interchangeable price references. The vanadium content, impurity limits and physical form can all change the value of the material.
| Comparison | Main Price Difference |
| FeV50 vs FeV80 | Different vanadium content and alloy concentration |
| 98% vs 99.5% V2O5 | Different purity and impurity-control requirements |
| V2O5 Flake vs Powder | Different physical form and application requirements |
| Metallurgical vs Chemical Grade | Different chemistry and downstream acceptance standards |
For V2O5, you can compare purity and chemistry in our vanadium pentoxide purity and specification guide.
If physical form is part of the comparison, see our V2O5 flake vs powder guide.
3. Europe, the U.S. and China Are Different Markets
Europe, the United States and China have their own regional transaction levels. The same vanadium product can therefore trade at different prices in each market even after the units are converted.
The difference can reflect local supply, inventory, downstream steel and alloy demand, purchasing activity, delivery conditions and the availability of material within that region.
Regional quotation habits also matter. One market may report a transaction reference based on contained vanadium, while another may report the value of the finished alloy or oxide product.
For China-specific market information, see our China vanadium price market.

4. International Price Is Not China Domestic Price
International vanadium references and China domestic prices represent different transaction systems. Neither should be copied directly into an export quotation.
| Comparison Point | International Market | China Domestic Market |
| Currency | USD | RMB |
| Common Unit | USD/kg V, USD/lb or USD/lb V | RMB/MT |
| Price Basis | Regional market reference | Domestic transaction basis |
| Tax & Payment | Depends on regional quotation basis | May include domestic tax and local payment conditions |
| Use in Export Quotation | Market reference only | Domestic cost reference only |
A China domestic price can help show the local cost level, while an international reference can show the regional market direction. The actual export offer still has to be calculated separately.
5. FOB, CFR and CIF Are Different Prices
The same batch of ferrovanadium or V2O5 can have several correct export prices because different Incoterms include different costs.
| Trade Term | Quotation Includes |
| FOB | Material plus applicable China-side export and port costs |
| CFR | FOB basis plus ocean freight to the destination port |
| CIF | CFR basis plus the applicable insurance cost |
A FOB Tianjin quotation and a CIF quotation to another country should therefore not be expected to show the same price even when the product specification is identical.
6. Freight, Exchange Rate and Payment Terms Change the Final Quote
Export prices can also change without a major movement in the underlying vanadium market.
| Commercial Factor | How It Affects the Quote |
| USD/RMB Exchange Rate | Changes the conversion between China-side cost and USD export pricing |
| Ocean Freight | Changes CFR and CIF quotations by destination |
| Destination Port | Different routes have different freight and handling costs |
| Payment Terms | TT, LC and payment period can change the commercial basis of an offer |
| Packaging | Drums, bags or special export packing can change total order cost |
| Inspection | Additional inspection requirements can add order-related costs |
This is why two suppliers can quote the same grade on the same day and still produce different FOB or CIF offers.
How V2O5 Price Affects Ferrovanadium
V2O5 is an upstream vanadium-bearing material used in ferrovanadium production, so changes in V2O5 cost can affect the production cost of ferrovanadium.
However, ferrovanadium does not move mechanically with V2O5. The final FeV market price is also affected by steel demand, alloy inventory, plant quotations, regional transactions and order conditions.

If you are sourcing ferrovanadium, see our ferro vanadium product range.
Example: Why Two Vanadium Quotes Cannot Be Compared Directly
Consider two ferrovanadium offers:
| Comparison Point | Quote A | Quote B |
| Product | FeV80 | 70–80% Ferrovanadium |
| Quotation Unit | USD/kg V | USD/lb |
| Delivery Basis | FOB China | Delivered regional reference |
| Quantity | Bulk export order | Different transaction lot |
The numerical prices alone do not tell you which quotation is lower. Before comparing them, align the product grade, contained vanadium, quotation unit, delivery basis, quantity and freight.

International Vanadium Price FAQ
Q: Why Are European And U.S. Ferrovanadium Prices Different?
A: They are separate regional markets and may use different quotation units, delivery conditions and transaction bases. Regional supply, inventory and demand can also differ.
Q: What Does USD/Kg V Mean?
A: USD/kg V expresses the price on a contained-vanadium basis rather than simply the gross weight of the ferrovanadium alloy.
Q: What Does USD/Lb V Mean For V2O5?
A: It is an international market reference based on the contained vanadium value represented by the V2O5 material.
Q: Can RMB/MT Be Compared Directly With USD/Lb V?
A: No. The units, currency, product basis and transaction conditions are different and must first be converted to the same basis.
Q: Why Does FeV80 Cost More Than FeV50?
A: FeV80 contains a higher concentration of vanadium than FeV50, so the alloy value and quotation basis are different.
Q: Why Can 99.5% V2O5 Cost More Than 98% V2O5?
A: Higher-purity material has a different product specification and impurity-control requirement, so it should not be compared directly with standard 98% material.
Q: Is The International Market Reference The Same As An FOB Price?
A: No. A market reference indicates the market level, while an FOB offer includes the actual product specification and applicable export costs.
Q: Why Is CIF Higher Than FOB?
A: CIF includes additional freight and insurance components that are not included in the FOB basis.
Q: Does V2O5 Price Determine Ferrovanadium Price?
A: V2O5 is an important upstream cost factor, but ferrovanadium prices are also affected by steel demand, alloy supply, inventory and regional transaction conditions.
