Ferrovanadium is obtained from slag and other vanadium-containing materials by heating them in a special way. The resulting vanadium steels can be divided into two types. The first type contains less than 0.15% vanadium and is called microdoped. The second type contains more than 0.15% vanadium and is called highly doped.

Ferrovanadium is added to the ferrous metal production process to make the resulting alloys stronger and more resistant to corrosion. Ferrovanadium can also be used to make lighter but stronger steel products.
