Ferrovanadium is a ferroalloy primarily made up of 35-50% vanadium (V), 1-3% silicon (Si), and 0.5-1.5% aluminum (Al), with the remainder being iron (Fe) and other impurities. It is produced in arc furnaces lined with magnesite. The production process involves reducing vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) and processing slag with aluminum. The smelting occurs in two phases: in the first phase, vanadium is extracted from the raw materials, and the byproducts of secondary smelting (converter slag, V2O5, and second-stage slag) are melted, with lime, fluorspar, and excess ferrosilicon added as reducing agents. The metal produced in this phase contains 35-40% V and 9-12% Si, while the slag has a vanadium content of ≤ 0.35%. After draining the slag, the second phase begins, focusing on refining the metal from the first phase by removing silicon. V2O5 is introduced into the furnace along with lime in a 1:1 ratio, ensuring that the silicon content in the metal does not exceed 2%. The products from the second phase, which include ferrovanadium and slag containing 10-15% V2O5, are then cast into molds. The vanadium-rich slag is returned to the first phase furnace, and the ferrovanadium is crushed. This alloy is utilized to enhance the strength of steel and cast iron.
