Silicon Nitride Ceramics

 

Silicon nitride does not react with nitric, sulfuric and hydrochloric acids, weakly reacts with orthophosphoric acid and intensively with hydrofluoric acid. It is decomposed by melts of alkalis, oxides and carbonates of alkali metals. It does not react with chlorine up to 900 °C, with hydrogen sulfide up to 1000 °C, with hydrogen up to 1200 °C. It does not react with melts of Al, Pb, Sn, Zn, Bi, Cd, Cu; it forms silicides with transition metals, and silicates with metal oxides above 1200 °C. Oxidation of silicon nitride in air begins above 900 °C.
