As a metallurgical additive, 65% silicon carbide is mainly applied in the following process stages:

1. Deoxidation and Alloying in Electric Furnaces / Converters Steelmaking

 

In the smelting process of ordinary carbon steel and low-alloy steel, 65% silicon carbide can be added into the molten steel or slag as a deoxidizer to reduce the oxygen content in the steel and decrease the formation of inclusions. At the same time, its silicon and carbon elements will enter the molten steel, playing a certain alloying role, which can partially replace ferrosilicon and recarburizers.

2. Slag Surface Deoxidation in Ladle Refining Furnaces (LF)

At the LF refining station, 65% silicon carbide is often added to the surface of the steel slag, used to reduce iron oxide (FeO) and manganese oxide (MnO) in the slag, lower the oxidation of the slag, improve the purity of the molten steel, and help form foaming slag, improving the submerged arc effect and heating efficiency.

3. Pre-inoculation Conditioning and Carbon/Silicon Addition in Cast Iron Melting In the production of gray cast iron and ductile iron, 65% silicon carbide can be added into the induction furnace or cupola to play a dual role of increasing silicon and carbon, while simultaneously promoting graphitization, reducing the chilling tendency (white iron tendency), and improving the machinability of castings. It is typically used before the addition of high-purity inoculants to adjust the matrix composition of the molten iron.

4. Reducing Agent in Ferroalloy Production When producing ferroalloys such as ferrosilicon and silicomanganese, 65% silicon carbide can be used as part of the carbonaceous reducing agent, replacing a portion of coke or petroleum coke, utilizing its higher reactivity and silicon content to improve reduction efficiency.

5. Reduction and Deoxidation in Non-ferrous Metallurgy In the pyrometallurgy of non-ferrous metals such as copper and nickel, 65% silicon carbide can be used to reduce valuable metal oxides in the slag, lower the loss of valuable metals in the slag, and simultaneously adjust the viscosity and melting point of the slag.
