Calcium carbide (CaC₂): (synonyms: acetylenogen, calcium acetylide, carburo calcico, calcium dicarbide, CAS registration number 75-20-7, molecular weight 64.1) Compounds of carbon with metals and other elements that are electropositive to carbon are called carbides. These compounds are usually made by subjecting metals or their oxides to a calcination process in the presence of carbon. Ca +2 C → CaC₂ When calcium carbide reacts with water, acetylene is formed: CaC₂ +2 H₂O → Ca(OH)₂ + C₂H₂ Acetylene (C₂H₂) is a colourless gas with a faint characteristic odour. Its boiling point is -83.8°C and its freezing point is -80.8°C. Technically, acetylene, which is derived from calcium carbide, has an unpleasant odor due to the impurities it contains. Acetylene can combust in the air, which releases a significant amount of heat. This is why acetylene mixed with oxygen is widely used for welding and cutting metals. As a highly reactive compound, acetylene burns in air at temperatures up to 3150°C, releasing a significant amount of heat when combined with oxygen.
