Adding a small amount of vanadium (less than 0.2 percent) to structural steels makes them stronger and more flexible. This is because vanadium carbide promotes the grinding of grains in steel. Such HSLA steels are used in automotive parts such as hoods and door panels, as well as in oil and gas pipelines. Almost all tool steels contain vanadium in an amount of 0.10 to 5%. In some types of cast iron, the addition of a small amount of vanadium helps control the size and distribution of graphite flakes. This makes the castings more durable and wear-resistant.
