Physical Properties Of Ferrosilicon Alloys

Analysis of the physical properties of ferrosilicon alloy:
Pure silicon is steel gray, a crystalline substance with a metallic appearance, hard and brittle, and is a non-metal. The atomic weight of silicon is 28.08. , density 2300kg/m3, melting point 1535k.

Silicon and iron can dissolve each other in any proportion and can produce silicides such as fesi2, fesi fe5si3 fe2si, among which the new form fesi exists in the liquid alloy, and the remaining silicides can decompose in the solid state when heated.

Ferrosilicon is an iron alloy composed of iron and silicon. The melting point of ferrosilicon increases as the silicon content increases, and the melting point of standard ferrosilicon is lower than 1643k.

The alloy of silicon and iron is prone to segregation, and the difference between the silicon content in the upper part of the alloy ingot and the silicon content in the lower part is more than 20%. The greater the thickness of the alloy ingot and the longer the cooling time, the more serious the segregation will be.

Ferrosilicon products will pulverize. This is because ferrosilicon containing impurities such as phosphorus, aluminum and calcium is stored in a humid atmosphere, causing pulverization and releasing toxic gases.

Deoxidizer and alloy conditioner for steelmaking; used as inoculant in casting.
