Ferro silicon is commonly used as a deoxidizer in the steelmaking industry. During the steelmaking process, oxygen can dissolve into the molten metal from the air or other sources. This dissolved oxygen can react with other elements present in the steel, leading to the formation of undesirable oxides, such as iron oxide (FeO).
Ferro silicon, which is an alloy of iron and silicon-containing varying percentages of silicon (usually between 15% to 90%), is added to the molten steel to remove these oxygen impurities. The silicon in ferrosilicon has a strong affinity for oxygen. When ferrosilicon is added to the molten steel, the silicon reacts with the dissolved oxygen to form silica (SiO₂) and gaseous silicon dioxide (SiO₂), which escape as gas.
