Electrolytic manganese metal refers to the manganese salt obtained by acid leaching of manganese ore, which is then sent to an electrolytic cell for electrolysis to obtain the pure metal. It looks like iron, in the form of irregular flakes, hard and brittle, shiny on one side and rough on the other, silver-white to brown in colour, and greyish-silver when processed into powder. It oxidises easily in air, dissolves and displaces hydrogen when exposed to dilute acid, and can decompose water to release hydrogen at slightly above room temperature.
