Industrial acetylene gas finds application in a variety of fields, including welding, the synthesis of chemicals (such as solvents and plastics) and as a fuel source for atomic absorption spectrometers.
Calcium cyanamide, meanwhile, finds application in slow-acting fertilisers and the production of dicyandiamide (DCD, a raw material for medicines and flame retardants).
Calcium carbide slag, a by-product of the smelting process, is chiefly composed of Ca(OH)2 and finds application in the manufacture of building materials (bricks, cement), the treatment of acid wastewater and flue gas desulphurization.
