Silicon can be divided into two categories: metallurgical grade and chemical grade. Metallurgical grade is mainly used in casting aluminium alloys, and a small amount is also added to deformed aluminium alloys and other metal alloys. The purpose of adding industrial silicon is to improve the fluidity and toughness of metals. Chemical grade silicon is mainly used in the direction of new silicon-based materials, i.e., organosilicon (silicon-based materials to replace carbon-based materials), polysilicon (silicon-based materials to produce energy).

 

Metallurgical grade silicon mainly considers the impurity content of iron and calcium elements in industrial silicon, with calcium as the key. Typical recycled cast aluminium alloys of the ADC12 grade mainly use 553# industrial silicon. Casting aluminium alloy mainly uses 441#, 3303# industrial silicon. For deformed aluminium alloys, the requirement of phosphorus and other elements in industrial silicon, usually using 2502#, 2202# industrial silicon with less impurity content.
