The production of silicon metal is a complex process that involves the carbothermic reduction of silica in electric arc furnaces. This method starts with the selection of high-purity quartz, a naturally occurring form of silicon dioxide (SiO2). The quartz is meticulously chosen to ensure the highest quality of the final product.

The high-purity quartz is then combined with carbon-based materials, such as coal, coke, and wood chips. These carbon materials act as reducing agents, crucial for the chemical reaction that will transform silica into silicon metal. The mixture of quartz and carbon materials is placed into an electric arc furnace, where it is subjected to extremely high temperatures, often exceeding 2000°C (3632°F).

Within the furnace, the intense heat causes the carbon to react with the silica, breaking down the silicon dioxide into its constituent elements. This reaction produces carbon monoxide gas and molten silicon.

The molten silicon, now separated from the impurities, collects at the bottom of the furnace. This silicon is then tapped from the furnace and allowed to cool and solidify into silicon metal. The cooling process is carefully controlled to ensure that the silicon solidifies into the desired crystalline structure.
