The production of ferrosilicon is based on the reduction of quartzite silica with solid carbon. Composition of the charge for smelting FeSi70: reducing agent (coal, coke), quartzite, wood chips, shavings.

The reducing agent and quartzite are crushed and dispersed; chips and shavings do not require additional preparation. The charge is loaded into furnace bunkers, from where it enters the furnace.

FeSi70 is used in ferrous metallurgy. This alloy is added as an alloying element in the manufacture of heat- and corrosion-resistant, spring and electrical steels. Ferrosilicon increases the elasticity of cast iron and steel, their hardness and tensile strength. FeSi70 is also used for deoxidation.
